In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded by Bob Downs in Madison Wisconsin. Bob’s extensive cycling experience plus an 8-year career as the accessories product manager of one of America's elite bicycle companies proved to be the perfect cornerstones for creating Planet Bike.

Bob and the entire Planet Bike team are passionate about cycling and they all ride every chance they get including commuting to work in some of the toughest weather conditions anywhere in the winter. These firsthand experiences and a desire to help improve the world for cycling help Planet Bike continually invent and reinvent cutting-edge cycling accessories to make every ride more fun.

Planet Bike doesn’t stop with intelligent, user-friendly bicycle accessories though. In many ways, they began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Planet Bike wants to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. That’s why they donate 25% of the company’s profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage. Bob Down’s corporate policy can best be summed up by one of his favorite quotes by Gandhi: "Be the change you want to see in the world."
